Emission Découverte

The Radio-Canada weekly science program Découverte by Charles Tisseyre offers over 10 years of weekly 1hr programs about science, available on the Internet.  If you are looking for new ideas on teaching science in the French Language, this is a good place to start.  The programs discusses current scientific events by today’s scientist.    You will find the link here:

I found many interesting ideas to use in my classroom from this program.

Drawing the Fibonacci sequence

We can also draw the Fibonacci sequence.  From 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc.  Each subsequent number in the sequence is made from adding the two previous numbers of the sequence.  Number 3 is the addition of number 2 and number 1.

The Youtube description on how to do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzT5FncnEYc

From Grade 4 – Number sense and numeration.

• solve problems involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of single- and
multi-digit whole numbers, and involving the addition and subtraction of decimal numbers
to tenths and money amounts, using a variety of strategies;

Fibonacci sequence

The Fibonacci sequence is as follows:  1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etc.  It is made by adding the two previous numbers to obtain the next one.  The Hopscotch code will calculate the Fibonacci sequence.  Here is how to write the code.

Math talk

In order to assess where students are at, we can see their thinking by looking at the strategies they use in order to solve a math problem.

Let’s learn our multiplication table the “old fashion way”

Nothing prevents us from learning our multiplication tables the old fashion way while having fun….  Here’s the Youtube video on how to code it and the link to the Hopscotch code.

Virtual field trip at #WISE14

photo (95)

I took this picture at the Pearson International Airport.  The Qatar Airways airplane was parked next to Derry Street.  Perhaps some people are going to Qatar for the WISE Initiative conference of this week.

The theme of this year’s conference is:  Imagine-Create-Learn: Creativity at the heart of education.
http://www.wise-qatar.org/

I will attend, but VIRTUALLY.  Those interested in the conference can follow #WISE14 on twitter.

Don’t jump, I am listening..

If any one of you have a program you would like me to write for you, please let me know.  This program was a request made by a teacher interested in technology and possibly coding.  If you have ideas and need help with the coding, I am all too happy to help.  This would work well in a grade 5 class, in a structures unit.

Tunnel vision

In a Radio-Canada program to be aired later today, there will be a discussion of life after death and how some people mention seeing tunnel vision:

• describe, extend, and create a variety of numeric and geometric patterns, make predictions
related to the patterns, and investigate repeating patterns involving reflections;

De-icing poop

This program was inspired from a CBC radio news program I heard this morning.  It talked about how because of global warming, our the arctic ice is melting and YEARS old bacteria trapped in the ice is going to be released as a result.  It makes a quite nice program that can be used in grade 4 or 5 science.
